Sauce, please!
I'm making some whole wheat pumpkin ravioli soon but am clueless about what sauce should accompany it. I'd like to make it myself but am open to suggestions for store-bought sauces that are available in the Chicago area. It doesn't need to be super cheap, just not crazy expensive. I saw a pasta sauce recipe that called for black truffle oil, for example, and another that called for saffron. If a single ingredient costs more than $10, the recipe is not for me! I'm not picky and enjoy thick or thin, chunky or creamy, sweet or savory. I just really have no idea what to serve this pasta with since I have seen it mostly with mascarpone sauces. Thanks in advance to anybody with a good idea. : ) |

A hill of beans
Literally! Last night, I set out some beans to soak for a chili recipe I wanted to make today. Somehow, I managed to soak about four times the amount I needed. (yesterday was a..trying day, lol) Now, I've got a huge 1-gallon bag filled most of the way with a mixture of navy beans, black-eyed peas, and pink beans. Can I just stick them in the fridge for awhile until I figure out what in the hell I'm going to make with them? I've already got a bunch of meals planned out and a fridge packed full of food, so it's going to be awhile before I can use them to make any more food, lol. Maybe the freezer? Please halp, fellow cooks! |

funfunfun fest day 1 pictures
howdy all, so the nice people @ funfunfun fest let me in with my "professional" camera after all :-) i think what they were really trying to prevent is telephoto lenses, because my dinky little 17-55mm didn't seem threatening to them. i saw others near the stage with similarly-sized lenses, but everyone w/a telephoto had a 'media' wristband. anyway i took some pics and some of them turned out really nice. check them out here. previews behind the cut. check my flickr page later or add me as a contact if you want to see day 2 pics. Lost Dog MLK/Lamar
About 6:40 on my way home from work I saw a dog along walking up the sidewalk. I was coming down MLK, about a block away from the intersection at Lamar. The dog looked to be a german shepard (or a similar breed, I'm bad with dogs!) It had a collar on and one of it's tags was red (only thing I could see) It was casually walking up the sidewalk(away from Lamar), but I didn't see a human near it so I assume that he or she ran away from its owner. Hopefully the dog's owner was nearby or someone here will find it! |

The Giant Pumpkin
Every day, we (Animal Place) receive hundreds of pounds of day-old produce donated by two grocery stores. Yesterday, an employee at one notified us that a 60lb pumpkin had failed to sell and did we want it? Um, do pigs love food? Yes!
Abby, sanctuary supervisor and Louie, animal caregiver, took a picture with the giant gourd. And then it was time to abandone the pumpkin to its fate. Enjoy! The pigs and cattle sure did!

Follow-up question to Vitamin D
Does anyone know where I can fill a prescription for 50,000IU of Vegan Vitamin D in the Seattle area?? I tried Pharmaca, but they tried to give me Vitamin D3 in gel caps and then said their wholesaler doesn't carry D2. I tried Fred Meyer but was met with the same answer. FM also said that Walgreens uses the same supplier, so I probably wouldn't have any luck there either. I'm still googling to no avail. Thought I would start calling around in a bit. Have any of you had any luck? Thanks so much! |

Raw vegan
Hai guys, for a while i have been considering transitioning to a raw diet, probably 70%-80% raw. I've found a few great blogs about it so far, but I'm wondering if any other raw vegans have some favourite resources they'd like to share? I'm also kind of concerned that a raw diet would leave me feeling unsatisfied... right now i depend on a lot of starchy, gluteny, carby foods to feel full, like rice, pasta, bread, potatoes, etc. I want to cut these out of my diet because they completely sap my energy whenever I eat them and make me feel terrible, but I don't know of any raw foods that feel as satisfying as these.... Did anyone else have this issue when they went raw or is it a weird question? Thanks a lot :) |

vaccines?
ok i've been trying to find out online, and doing some research, but have found no answer: WHY are vaccines derived from eggs? and which ones are and which aren't?! there's been a lot of talk of vaccines on this community recently and it just got me thinking. i've had a few vaccines (necessary for traveling & school, supposedly) and i'd hate to think they were from eggs. i have never had any sort of flu shot, which i know are from eggs, are ALL vaccines from eggs? sorry if that's a dumb question. i'm sorry if these have already been asked and i missed it. thanks in advance guys <333 |

I'm new, HI! PF Changs vegan?
Hi everyone! I'm new to LJ, and semi-new to veganism.. So a community like this is something I need (: I'm going to PF Changs, and was wondering what they have there that is vegan? I saw online that the Buddha Feast is, but I was wondering if anything else that anyone knew about is? The information I found online was not very recent. Thanks! |

Kentucky Soybean Association is against animal rights!!!!!!
The issue with the videos, I posted about a couple of days ago, is much more serious than I realized. It seems that the Kentucky Soybean Association is at war against animal rights. I'm not sure what to do. I was hoping maybe you could tell me. First, you need to go to this link and read what it says. It's bad. Then come back and read the message I got back from the advisor in charge of Future Farmers of America, after voicing my concerns about the videos the children were making. These people are shooting themselves in the foot. Seriously! Lots of vegans eat soy! I'm about to become soy-free, at least I'm going to have to figure out what soy is grown in Kentucky. But I'll bet you anything it's not just Kentucky. So PLEASE, go read, come back and tell me what to do. Tell me what you are going to do.

Breastfeeding question
I am going on 8 months pregnant. I have known this whole time, as well a years before, that I would be breastfeeding my little one. However, at my last OB appointment I was told it wouldn't be good for the baby for me to breastfeed. I have many health problems and the fact that I am pregnant is a miricle in it's self. My doctor supports my Vegan diet and always has great suggestions. I take a lot of medications. Right now I'm only on about half of my needed meds because of the baby. Once I give birth I can go back on them, but they would be bad for baby through breast milk. Also, I take narcotics and we know that the baby will have to go through withdraws when he is born. If I keep giving him meds through my breast milk it will take forever. So, I am not going to breastfeed. Any advice on this topic? I don't know where to start or what I should us for him. I am sad. |

Printer Ink Cartridge Recycling/Refills/Discount Replacement
I thought this question had been asked not too long ago, but can't find in tags/memories: Best place to take used printer cartridges in return for discount on replacements? Location doesn't really matter - paying the least possible for replacements is a bigger deal. Thanks so much for your help, ! You guys are making a hard time a heck of a lot easier. Vegan friendly stocks?
Does anyone have suggestions for companies I could buy stock in that sell vegan products or are in some other way vegan friendly? Tofutti (TOF) is one possibility, or there is the complicated Whole Foods (WFMI), but most of the other "mainstream" vegan brands (Silk, White Wave, Boca, etc) seem to be owned by very large companies doing too many things that I disagree with. Of course I'm concerned about profitability too, but right now I just need a list to start researching :).
Thanks!

Petsitters?
Our usual petsitter has taken on a new full-time job, and we need to find one in time for the holidays! Can anyone recommend a petsitter or petsitting service in the north central area? FWIW, we have two dogs, one low-maintenance cat, and a few plants that need watering. Thanks in advance. (Sorry if this is redundant, but I didn't find any posts about sitters under the "pets" or "animals" tags.) |

New Veg
Hi everyone I just recently decided that I wanted to go Vegan but I'm easing myself into it by being vegetarian first. I'm trying to limit dairy but not exclude it all together quite yet. By the way my name is Cat and I'm the mother of a 1 1/2 year old boy named Charlie. |
