Pumpkin's passing
Pumpkin:
January, 1989 (?) to November 27, 2005

My sweet Pumpkin passed from this world early this morning after several hours of agony. He seemed on the verge of death for quite some time. When death did not come so quickly and his suffering seemed to get worse, I drove him to an emergency vet and asked them to euthanize him. My greatest regret is that I waited so long. I was out of tears by that time, or so I thought. Waking up opened up the floodgates again. Pumpkin was my child, my love, my best friend. I have a hole in my heart.

It was in July, 1991 that I adopted two adult cats whom I would rename Pumpkin and Sweetie. Pumpkin was always a feisty one who would talk and let you know what he wanted. He had a plush soft coat and a rich, velvet purr. He loved to eat cookies, bread, and raisins. His sweet face and charming personality delighted even confirmed cat haters. It still amazes me that Pumpkin and Sweetie's previous person was prepared to send them to the pound after two and a half years of their loving presence. Fortunately some animal lovers and foster parents saved them from this fate, and I was able to receive them into my life. Things were never the same after that.

Pumpkin had this habit of jumping on the bed and asking to be let under the blanket, so I could hold his warm purring body. He didn't do this the last week and a half. The tumors seemed to have made it difficult for him to comfortably lie down and he would often stand on the cable box trying to get its warmth. His pain severely impacted his personality the last week of his life, but he still offered me purrs whenever he could.

I did have many wonderful years with him, but this does not make it any less painful to be without my Pumpkin. I will miss him immensely. Sweetie has never been without him before, and it's obvious that she is in a grieving stage as well. Even Sky seems to be missing him already.

Words could never express my love for Pumpkin or how much his loss hurts.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. I know how hard it is to loose a feline friend. Hugs from Illinois.

My condolences to you Gabe. If there's anything I can do let me know. I can't really think of what I could do, but I have ears to listen and my father is a vet (if you have questions) and my mother is a breeder (in case you ever need one). Hugs.

I wish I had anything to make it better, but I know that's impossible. I'm sorry, hun. :( I can't fathom the pain you're feeling right now. I hope the hurt fades quickly, and the good memories shine through. I'm always here for you. Take care of yourself and your other babies.

Thanks, Monica. I appreciate your sweet words. At a time when it is hard not to be sad, your kindness is really touching.

oh gabe, i am so sorry. pumpkin sounds so much like my beloved cat panzer, who died 2 years ago, and i still miss him so much that i cry at the slightest memory. which means i'm crying now. it's so hard to let our babies go, but think about how lucky we were to have had them at all, no?

i'm preparing to adopt a 15 year old cat, knowing full well that he might only have a couple years left, but i'm going to do it anyway because this sweet little geezer deserves a warm bed for the rest of his years...

Thank you, Kim. I'm sorry about Panzer. Yes, we are lucky to have had them in our lives. I just wish I had another 10 years or even another year....

I think adopting older kitties is a wonderful thing to do. They are so sweet and loving and generally settled down in their twilight years.

:( losing a pet is so hard. they are your constant, silent companions. they never betray you or hurt you or leave you. they don't ask for much. they're always there when you need them. *sad*

he's not really mine. either of the ones i post photos of. one belongs to my soon-to-be-ex roommate and another is my friend's. i just spend a lot of time with the little guys. i haven't had my own cat since i moved out of my parents' house. i think that once i get settled i might get a cat. i want to go to a no-kill shelter and adopt a real ugly kitty. :D usually the ugly ones have the best personalities ANYWAY, but nobody ever adopts them...

That's a good idea!! Of course, to me no kitty is really ugly! :O) Have you ever seen the kitty that was the oldest cat? He was a hairless cat and lived to be 34 years old!! http://www.cnn.com/US/9702/06/fringe/oldest.cat/movie.html
The person who had him has the current oldest cat also!! It looks like he's doing something right. This one is 38 years old!! They were both certified by Guinness Book of World Records. I'd like to meet this man and his cats, especially since he lives here in Austin....

I wonder what kind of diet he feeds them... although I imagine the cats are fairly arthritic and miserable past a certain age. :D
