I had the most fun I have ever had at a Thanksgiving on Thursday. Some friends and I had a ThanksVegan at Ross' place. It was yummy!!! :P I took pics of the food and then forgot my digital camera ....oh, well. Hopefully this will be our tradition and it will be repeated. I think that even a meat-eater would have enjoyed it. Come to think of it...there was a meatie or two there seriously into our food. Yumminess. Most Thanksgivings I just do nothing special. This was nice.....btw, it was a few days after Thanksgiving 15 years ago that I became a vegetarian.....I just looked it up. I became a vegetarian on November 27, 1989!! Today is my 15th year anniversary of vegetarianism. My 14th year anniversary of veganism was a couple of months ago (not sure of exact date, but it was between September and October, 1990).

I had a mostly vegan thanksgiving and loved it. (It was at my mom's & step-dad's house in Tennessee.) Speaking of vegan food, I got to got to the Austin Vegetarian group's (meet-up joined with them) potluck last month and it was 100% vegan. There were tons of people and lots of great food. The next one will be Saturday the 11th. You should definitely check it out.

Sounds really good. I've been wanting to make it to one of those. Maybe I can make the next one....

Gabe - I am going through some self reflections and am thinking very hard about going non-dairy. So far I have been getting mostly organic dairy, but still think I should get off it entirely for moral reasons, etc. My question is this: Can you give me some reasons why I should give up eggs too. Mind you I only buy eggs produced from free range, grain fed hens. I figure they probably don't let the chickens live to their natural lifespan...
Any references would be appreciated. Also any favorite vegan recipes would be great.

I commend you on that, Joshel. :O)

There are quite a few reasons to dump eggs. You are correct that free-range eggs are obtained from chickens that are later sold as "free range chicken." The chicken and egg indistry are related in the same way as the dairy and veal/beef industry are. Also, free range eggs are generally fertilized, which leaves the possibility of finding a little half-formed chick in there. That actually happens quite frequently in places where people eat fertilized eggs regularly. And, even if the egg is not fertilized, it is worth considering what exactly an egg is and where it comes from. Is that kind of reproductive waste what you want to be consuming? One thing that I wasn't aware of until recently is how painful it is for hens to lay eggs. There is someone in our vegan group who has a pet chicken from a rescue, and she lays an egg daily as a result of her breeding. For one hour a day, she has to sit with her while she goes through the process of laying this egg. If the egg breaks inside of her, it will kill her. She leaves the eggs for wild animals to consume. But, my point is that this breeding for the purpose of chickens that unnaturally produce so many eggs causes much suffering for the animals.

Here's (http://www.punchcraft.com/sunridge/page2.html) one example of a farm that sells free-range eggs. If you look at the other "items" sold, you will see that the free-range option is not necessarily that much better for the chicken in regard to its ultimate fate.

I have quite a few vegan cookbooks, so it's difficult for me to just pick a specific recipe. I would recommend starting out experimenting with something that sounds good from a good cookbook or from http://vegweb.com/.

Please feel free to ask me any other questions as well.
